Snow and Onsen: Winter in the Japanese Alps

3 OCTOBER 2026 · 5 min read

Famous powder snow by day, steaming hot springs and kaiseki dinners by night. Japan offers a winter escape unlike anywhere else.

Japan's winter is a favourite among Australian travellers, and for good reason. It is a short flight with little time difference, the snow is reliably deep, and the culture of hospitality makes every stay feel considered.

Beyond Niseko

Niseko remains the best known, but Hakuba in the Japanese Alps and Nozawa Onsen offer dramatic terrain with a more traditional village atmosphere. Each is easily paired with time in Tokyo or Kyoto on either side.

The ryokan ritual

After a day on the mountain, a night at a ryokan is the perfect reset. Soak in an outdoor onsen as snow falls around you, then sit down to a multi-course kaiseki dinner that reflects the season and the region.

The Meridian way

We combine ski days with English-speaking guides, private transfers and luggage forwarding between stays, so you travel light on the Shinkansen. Our ryokan partners welcome you with thoughtful touches, from private onsen bookings to room upgrades where available.
